How to Deal with the Pain in Your Heart
Growing up, one of my favorite films was The Wizard of Oz. I often think about the Tinman, longing for a heart. What would it be like to live without one? To never feel—no love, no joy, no pain.
But we do have hearts. Not just the physical organ but the heart chakra—our center for emotions, the energy field where we feel everything.
Our hearts allow us to experience the full spectrum of emotions: from the heaviest guilt, shame, and overwhelm to the lightest love and joy. When our hearts are open, we feel alive. Love flows freely. But when they’re closed, we feel pain, stress, and disconnection.
So, why do our hearts close?
As Moby sang, “Why does my heart feel so bad?” The answer lies in our past.
The yogis teach that a closed heart holds the residue of unprocessed emotions. Pain we didn’t know how to handle. Stress we buried. Trauma we pushed down. Over time, these unresolved experiences block the heart, causing it to ache and shut down.
How do we open our hearts again?
For years, I felt a deep ache in my chest—a constant reminder of my own blocks. It fueled my search for healing. Here’s what has helped me—and still does:
1. Connect with Your Heart
Your heart is like a child—it craves your attention. Pause and listen. Acknowledge it. Spend time with your heart, not rushing to fix it but simply being present.
2. Listen Deeply
The heart speaks its own language, singing its own song. Its wisdom runs deep, but it can only be heard when we truly listen. Tune in without judgment.
3. Accept Your Heart As It Is
I used to think I could fix my heart. But hearts don’t respond to control. They thrive on love and acceptance. When you embrace your heart—pain and all—you create the space for healing to begin.
4. Allow the Pain to Move Through
Healing the heart is not about avoiding pain. It’s about allowing old, stuck emotions to rise and release. This process takes patience, but over time, the heart begins to purify itself, letting go of blocks that no longer serve you.
When your heart opens, life feels richer. You can let the energy of love—known as Shakti—flow freely, filling your life with spontaneous joy and connection.
Let Your Heart Stay Open
Learning to live with an open heart is a journey. Over time, as you release old pain, the heart becomes a channel for love, peace, and wholeness. It takes courage, but the rewards are profound.
Here’s to embracing the beauty of your heart, even when it feels heavy. To letting love flow through every corner of your being.
With an open heart, Martin
